DMPD: Officer shoots man armed with weapon during drug investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man believed to be involved in an ongoing narcotics-related investigation was shot by a Des Moines police officer Thursday night on the city’s southeast side.

The shooting took place around 8:41 p.m. in the 1200 block of Maury Street, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek a spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department. Investigators with DMPD’s Narcotics Section requested help from patrol officers to stop a 43-year-old man as part of their investigation.

Two DMPD officers stopped the man and during the investigation, he produced a weapon. A confrontation occurred and an officer opened fire. First aid was administered to the man and medics with the Des Moines Fire Department arrived to transport him to the hospital. The man who was shot remains hospitalized, receiving care. His name and condition have not been released.

Sgt. Parizek said the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative assignment, which is standard policy.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the officer-involved shooting.

More information is expected to be released by the DMPD later Friday morning.
