One critically injured in fire at vacant home on Saturday night

DES MOINES, Iowa — One person was critically injured during a fire in a vacant home in the Highland Park neighborhood on Saturday night.

According in the Des Moines Fire Department, at approximately 11:03 p.m. responders were called to the 3100 block of 6th Avenue in the Highland Park neighborhood on reports of a fire.

Responders arrived on scene and found a vacant building with boarded up windows and doors. Officers had to remove the boarding before they could gain access to the home.

Authorities say heavy fire was coming from the first floor of the home. Crews eventually gained access to the second floor of the building where an adult male was found.

The man was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The DSM Fire Department says there is not update on his condition.

Crews were able to get the fire under control and extinguished.

An investigation has been opened into the cause of the fire.
