13 people escape Des Moines home after morning fire; 2 pets killed

DES MOINES, Iowa — Thirteen people made it out of a King Irving neighborhood home safely Friday morning after a fire was reported in the basement.

Fire crews were dispatched to a home in the 1500 block of 13th Street around 8:54 a.m. after a neighbor smelled smoke and called 911, said District Fire Chief Brian Davis of the Des Moines Fire Department.

There were 13 people in the home who were able to get out but two pets did not survive the fire.

Chief Davis said one room in the home’s basement was affected by the fire. The flames did not spread to any neighboring homes.

Polk County has been contacted to provide assistance to the home’s occupants.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
