An end to the cold and light snow on the way

DES MOINES, Iowa — We began the day in the basement, with frigid temperatures as seen below, and wind chills in some cases lower than -30. Better temperatures are ahead as we move into Wednesday.

Of note for Tuesday: Iowa is nearly snow-free, while Louisiana is nearly covered with snow. New Orleans saw more snowfall today than Des Moines has seen this winter.

Temperatures continue to warm above Monday’s (not enough!) under sunny skies. Your weather timeline takes you through Wednesday into Thursday:

Official lows Tuesday night will be in the single digits, but in reality temperatures will rise slowly overnight on south winds.

As milder air pushes into Iowa Wednesday, a warm front and trough will both cross the state. These will help create lift and intermittent snow showers from early morning into the evening. We may see enough snow in spots to create slick conditions in the afternoon and evening.

Snow estimates from one of our short-range models are below. Following that, the model snowfall graphic for Des Moines, which generally tells us to expect a quarter to a half an inch by Wednesday evening.

Highs move closer to what’s average for this time of year through the weekend, with a slight dip in temperatures on Thursday.

As for additional snowfall, the European ensemble model runs below seem to indicate we could see a couple of rounds of light snow accumulation between 1/30 and 2/4.
