AMES, Iowa — Authorities in Ames are seeking the public’s help after a dog was found suffering from a gunshot injury on Tuesday.
According to the City of Ames, on Tuesday afternoon animal control staff responded to a report of an animal in distress on Robin Street in south Ames. When staff arrived at the scene they located a roughly 10-year-old black Labrador mix with a gunshot injury. The dog, named Good Boy, was taken to a local vet and then transported to Iowa State University Veterinary School for treatment.
The Ames Animal Shelter said in a post on Facebook that bullet fragments were found in Good Boy’s skull and that the pressure caused by the gunshot likely ruptured his eye.
Animal Control Supervisor Ron Edwards said in a statement that Good Boy is stable, but will likely need surgery to remove his ruptured eye.
So far, the cost for Good Boy’s veterinary care is estimated to be $7,000. The Ames Animal Shelter is asking for donations to help with his care. The donation link can be found on the animal shelter’s website.
The city said Animal Control Officers have contacted businesses in the area where Good Boy was found and are checking security camera footage. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Ames Police Department at (515)239-5530 or the anonymous tip line at (515)239-5533.
