DES MOINES, IOWA — Colder temperatures were offset a bit by the appearance of the sun across much of the state today. Your weather timeline takes you into a colder Tuesday, with a chance for light, fluffy morning snow.

Snow looks to fall late tonight into the very early morning hours on Tuesday. Amounts will be light, and the cold and dry air it falls through will make for fluffy accumulations. Expect an inch on the high end with less in most areas. Stormpath images below show the timing and are followed by three computer model projections of totals.

It will be cold overnight, and even the fairly light winds will be enough to knock wind chill readings way down by the time you’re getting ready for work or school.

Looking at temperatures, we start off with a cold Tuesday and then warmup nicely through Friday. Cold air returns for the weekend.

The coldest air of the season will be moving in next week, as seen in the extended forecast graphic below.

The Des Moines International Airport has only seen a little over 4″ of snow this winter season. Areas to our south have more than that sitting on the ground right now after rounds of snowfall.

The extended models below don’t paint a picture of heavy snow on the way anytime soon. The green trace on the first image is the mean of various runs of the European model, showing less than two inches of accumulation in Des Moines through January 28. The image following shows expected snowfall over the next 32 days.

Your WHO 13 7-day forecast is below. Have a great rest of your Monday!
