Iowa’s 91st General Assembly gavels in legislative session today

DES MOINES, Iowa — Monday lawmakers at the Statehouse will gavel in Iowa’s 91st General Assembly, signaling the start of the legislative session.

Currently, Iowa Republicans hold a trifecta, a majority in the state House, and Senate, and a Republican Governor.

In the Senate, Iowa Republicans hold 34 seats and the Democrats hold 15. One seat is vacant.

In the House, Iowa Republicans hold 67 sets and the Democrats hold 33 seats.

The legislature will gavel in to start the session at 10:00 a.m.

House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst (D) District 32, said that the Democrats plan to prioritize childcare, affordable housing, and education during the legislative session.

“Our biggest focus will be on how we can lower costs for Iowa families. And so, you know, we’re looking out for that middle-class family who sits down at the kitchen table on Sunday night and figures out their bills for the week. We want to make sure that we’re helping give them relief and not just giving relief to the richest folks in Iowa. We want to make sure that we’re looking at things like affordable housing and childcare. And we’re always focused on making sure education is as strong as it can be in this state,” Konfrst said.

The GOP typically waits to announce its legislative priorities until the start of the session.
