MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — The Historical Society of Marshall County will host Marshalltown Mayor Joel Greer to speak about the inspirational story of Laurence Jones, the first African-American graduate of Marshalltown High School.

Jones was the founder of the famed Piney Woods Life School in Mississippi, which he opened in 1909, and has educated African-American students in academia, agriculture and the trades since then.
“Jones was almost lynched by an angry mob when the learned of his plans to start the school in Rankin County,” Greer said. “They gave him an opportunity to speak before they carried out their deed, but Jones’ eloquence convinced them to halt and free him.”
Jones, who also graduated from the University of Iowa, was motivated to address the lack of educational opportunities facing African-American students. And was motivated by his faith in God.
The event is part of HSMC’s recurring series called, ‘History on Second Tuesday.’ It will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mowry-Irvine Mansion located at 503 W. Main St. in Marshalltown.
The event is free-of-charge and open to the public. However, a free-will donation is encouraged to support the HSMC’s efforts to educate central Iowans about the significant contributions by Marshall County residents and of events that have shaped the county.
