Des Moines photographer to be sentenced in federal sexual exploitation, child porn case

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Des Moines photographer accused of using hidden cameras to capture nude photos and video of children is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday morning.

Jeffrey Gray, 62, owned a photography business, Wicked Imagery, that specialized in children’s dance photos and boudoir photography for adults. In February of 2024, he was arrested on federal child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child charges.

According to court records, Gray created and possessed child sexual abuse material between 2005 and 2016. Much of the material was gathered at his Wicked Imagery studio, by using hidden cameras placed in changing rooms. Investigators say a hard drive found at Gray’s home in 2023 contained sexual abuse material featuring at least 15 minor victims.

In September of 2024, the U.S. State’s Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Iowa said Gray had taken a plea deal in the case. In return for Gray pleading guilty to one count of Sexual Exploitation and Attempted Sexual Exploitation of a Child and one count of Possession of Child Pornography, prosecutors would dismiss six additional counts of Sexual Exploitation and Attempted Sexual Exploitation of a Child.

The judge will rule at sentencing on whether to accept the plea deal.

If the deal is accepted, Gray faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison with a maximum of 30 years on the sexual exploitation charge. There’s a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the possession of child pornography charge.
