DES MOINES, Iowa — Firefighters are working to put out a fire at a barn on Des Moines’ east side Monday morning that claimed the lives of at least two horses.
The call about a garage fire at 729 SE 32nd Street came in at 6:09 a.m. according to Capt. Stacia Swanson with the Des Moines Fire Department. That’s just southeast of the Iowa State Fairgrounds. When firefighters arrived at the scene they found heavy fire coming from a barn.
Several horses were inside the barn at the time and were able to escape safely, but Capt. Swanson confirmed at least two horses died in the fire.
No injuries to any civilians or firefighters have been reported.
Animal Control was called to help round up the horses, and some goats, that escaped from the burning barn.
Officers with the Des Moines Police Department are also on the scene to assist
