Ames turned into a picture postcard with over 4 inches of snow

AMES, Iowa — Residents of central Iowa got the alert Thursday morning — a snow squall was coming. It turned I-35 south of town into a white wonderland, and caused accidents.

After the snow, out came the sun, and so did the residents. The East 13th snow hill was busy with dozens of family members gliding down the hill.

For some residents it was time to look for the snow shovel.

“First, I thought we’re just going have a little bit, and then we got a nice nice bit,” said Sandy Gossman, of Ames. “Hard to shovel up, but it will be nice if it stays and let’s just have the same kind of spring as we had last year when the ground didn’t freeze.”

She said last winter and spring helped her garden with moisture.

“I think it’s just refreshing to be honest. I like snow color and the white is just very pretty with all the trees and stuff,” said Gossman. “The way it makes things look good, and moisture for next year for us hopefully.”

For Joanna Chan of Ames, the snow on Thursday was welcome. She grew up in Hong Kong, where they don’t have snow.

“Hong Kong very hot weather and this is my experience of snow, ” said Chan. “Because it is not safe to drive in snowy weather, but from another point of view, it is a beautiful scenery with snow, particularly at Christmas.”

Chan was so excited to scoop snow. She did her sidewalks, her driveway, and was also removing snow from the street in front of her house.

“Beautiful snow, it is very good that we have sunny weather and it is the sunny weather, which drove me out to have the snow cleared,” said Chan. “It is my fun to have the snow cleaned!”
