Monday night mess the start of an active week of cold and snow

MONDAY NIGHT MESS

A fast moving low pressure system will bring both rain and snow across Iowa Monday afternoon and night.

Temperatures above average and above freezing during the day will start the weather event as rainfall. A 0.1″ to 0.2″ of an inch of rain may fall through early evening.

Temperatures will be holding around 33-32 degrees during the evening so some areas may see the rain transition to a wet snow.

Snowfall totals will really be dependent on the drop in temperatures and if we’re able to get to the freezing mark and prevent melting. Estimates show a range of a half inch to isolated 3″ totals.

COLD AIR ARRIVES

This first wave of active weather will drop temperatures to the upper 20s for daytime highs to ring in the New Year. Another cold front will bring through another drop in temperatures for Friday and the weekend. Highs will then be in the low 20s and teens.

SNOW CHANCES ON THE WAY

The cold front that comes through on Thursday may lead to a few snow showers that could move through with a dusting to 2″ of snow through mid-day. The extreme cold on Sunday could settle in with a bigger weather system that does show some measurable snow starting to fall Sunday afternoon and continuing through early Monday morning, just in time for the start of the first full week back to work and school. Stay tuned to future forecasts.
