Library brings boardgame to life for families during holidays

WAUKEE, Iowa — The Waukee Public Library is helping out families by providing a place for kids to burn a little energy this winter break.

The Waukee Library set up a life-size game of Candyland for kids to play, with several of the games iconic characters making appearances.

“It works just like the board game, so, you’ll draw cards, wander through,” said Eliza Ahrens a children’s librarian at the Waukee Public Library. “It’s just a really good opportunity to have something festive over our winter break for all of our families.”

This is the fifth year the Waukee Public Library has hosted the event, and they hope to continue to grow every year.

“Over the years it’s grown and grown. We’ve added some more different things and we’re getting between 300 and 400 people a day coming through at this point,” said Ahrens. “So hopefully next year will be even bigger and better.”

Ahrens says families who come appreciate an opportunity to get their kids out and burn off some energy.

“If you’ve got kids at home on winter break, everybody’s getting a little zoo-ey, you can run through the program a couple of times and see who wins. You can play a couple of times so there are a couple of winners,” said Ahrens. “But explore all of our candy stuff and then pick up some books on your way out.”

If you’re looking to engage your kids over the holiday break, the library is also ready with kits for kids to take home and test out.

“We’ve got our play area; we have a bunch of STEM kits you can check out. So cool, interactive things, experiments, science stuff, robots, stuff you can take home with you as well with your library card.”

Candyland can still be visited at the Waukee Public Library December 27th from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and December 30th from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
