OSCEOLA, Iowa — Following the success of their holiday parade, Osceola is preparing for a car show that encourages people to deck their cars is boughs of holly — literally.
This is Osceola’s first year hosting a Christmas car show and event coordinator Savannah Flowers says she can’t wait to see how it turns out.
“We’re going to have cars come up here, with the Christmas lights on and stuff, and we’re going to get voting, and we want a winner,” said Flowers.
There will be four categories in the car show: truck, car, SUV, and other. A first prize will be picked in each category, and they’ll take home a cash prize.
Participants are allowed to use garland, lights, inflatables, ornaments and much more to transform their rides. Flowers says she’s most excited to see just how big people go.
“When they’re putting lights on their cars, there are so many different ways you can do it,” said Flowers.” And so, I’m most excited about seeing everyone’s creativity.”
The Osceola Fire Department was quick to sign up and showcase their holiday spirit.
“It’s a good way for the fire department to get involved in a community event,” said Osceola Fire Department’s Byron Jimmerson. “Seeing all the kids, getting everything lit up and having community activity in the wintertime that people can kind of get out for.”
Decorating a vehicle is meticulous work and decorating a fire truck is even more time consuming.
“We’ve got some dedicated members, and one of them in particular spends a lot of time preparing for getting stuff together,” said Jimmerson. “And once we kind of get how everything’s laid out, it comes together pretty well.”
The fire department spent two days covering their truck in various holiday decorations and they say they can’t wait to give the truck a whirl.
The weekend festivities also include the final winter market of the year and a visit from Santa from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The car show takes place December 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. on Filmore Street in Osceola. There is no pre-registration required so last minute arrivals are welcome, and everyone is invited to witness the show.
