RUNNELLS, Iowa — Fire crews from multiple departments were called out to a home in rural Runnells early Thursday morning after a fire started on the porch and quickly engulfed the house.
The home is located in the 9000 block of SE 32nd Street, just 20 minutes southeast of Des Moines, near Yellow Banks Park.
The fire began around 1:45 a.m. There were three occupants in the home at the time, a father, mother, and daughter. The daughter was awake at the time and saw the fire and was able to alert her parents. No injuries have been reported but the home is considered a total loss.
Fire crews encountered challenges in battling the blaze, including strong winds and a lack of water. The field next to the home also caught fire. Water had to be trucked into the scene because of a lack of water hydrants nearby.
While there were still hot spots flaring up at the scene, fire crews left the scene a little before 6:30 a.m. Fire Chief Craig Thompson of the Camp Township-Runnells Fire Department said because of the issues they faced in fighting the fire they were letting the fire burn itself out. Thompson remains on the scene to monitor the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
