WINDSOR HEIGHTS, Iowa — A Windsor Heights man was arrested Monday after police say he was found passed out behind the wheel while children were inside the vehicle.
Evan Beitz, 28, is charged with OWI-second and two counts of child endangerment, according to online court documents. Criminal complaints say a passerby found Beitz passed out at a stop sign at 70th Street and Colby Avenue in Windsor Heights Monday around 6:41 p.m. The vehicle was still running and two children were asleep in car seats in the backseat.
Police pounded on the driver’s window several times before Beitz woke up.
The criminal complaint said Beitz submitted to field sobriety testing and was unable to complete some of the tests. The document said the results of the Datamaster test indicated Beitz’s blood alcohol level was .265. The legal limit for drivers in Iowa is .08.
A preliminary hearing in the case is set for February 3rd.
