Metro father sentenced to 50 years in 12-month-old son’s fentanyl death

DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa — A West Des Moines man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison following the death of his young son.

According to the criminal complaint, in April 2023 Jacob Ballard deprived the child of health care after the child consumed fentanyl at his West Des Moines apartment. Online court documents said the child was 12 months old at the time of his death.

In October a jury found Ballard guilty of child endangerment resulting in death. On Friday, Ballard was sentenced to serve up to 50 years in prison. He must also pay $150,000 in restitution to the estate of the child.

The child’s mother, Angela Gabriel, was also prosecuted in the case. She was convicted of neglect of a dependent person and involuntary manslaughter. In August, Gabriel was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but the sentence was suspended. She must still serve five years of probation.
