DES MOINES, Iowa- Between 3 p.m. Friday afternoon and 6 a.m. Saturday morning, the Iowa State Patrol responded to 92 service calls because of weather conditions.
Freezing rain moved through Iowa starting Friday night. Despite the Department of Transportation’s efforts to treat roads, they were slick.
Sergeant Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol said, “That treatment is going to last for a little while, but there’s just nothing you can do when you get this amount of moisture and this amount of cold and it starts to freeze on those roadways. And once we see that really start freezing, it’s only going to keep multiplying as that moisture keeps falling and we’re seeing that ice build on things.”
Officials warned Iowans to stay home until road conditions improved. “The ice covered roads are very dangerous, and you really don’t have any control of your vehicle. It is just a complete skating rink out there,” said Dinkla.
Early Saturday morning, roads in central Iowa were partially covered in ice and and eastern Iowa roads were completely covered in ice. However, when the storm picked up just before 6 a.m., roads in central Iowa continued to get worse.
“We’re quickly seeing the road conditions here in central Iowa go from partially covered to quickly becoming 100% ice covered. And over southeastern and eastern Iowa, it is a complete ice covered mess over in that part of the state,” said Dinkla.
Despite their warnings, the Iowa State Patrol had a busy night responding to multiple crashes. They had extra crews working overnight and early Saturday morning to assist.
Of the 92 service calls received, 34 were crashes and 58 were motorist assists. Only 4 injuries were reported.
Dinkla said more incidents may occur past 6 a.m. as roads will remain completely or partially covered across the state until temperatures rise above the freezing point and there’s enough time for the ice to melt.
