MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A Newton man is facing a slew of charges after police said he tried to flee from officers and instead hit several vehicles in a Walmart parking lot. He then allegedly led police on a chase that ended with two more patrol vehicles sustaining damage.
54-year-old Aaron Parrish Scalabrini was arrested after the alleged incident on Tuesday.
According to the Marshalltown Police Department, officers were called to the Walmart in the 2800 block of South Center Street around 2:30p.m. after a report of intoxicated person. Officers arrived at the scene and found Scalabrini in his vehicle in the parking lot. While talking with officers, Scalabrini fled, backed into a patrol car and hit an another vehicle nearby, causing minor injuries to a person inside, according to a MPD release on the incident that was posted to the city’s website.
Scalabrini continued to drive away from the Walmart driving erratically before the pursuit ended in the 2600 block of South Center Street (Highway 14) after police used their patrol vehicles to immobilize him, said the release. Two more Marshalltown Police Department patrol vehicles were damaged, according to the city.
Scalabrini was taken into custody and booked into the Marshall County Jail. No officers were injured in the incident.
Scalabrini was charged with:
- Eluding (Aggravated Misdemeanor)
- Operation While Intoxicated (OWI) 1st Offense (Serious Misdemeanor)
- Driving While Revoked for OWI Test Failure (Serious Misdemeanor)
- Interference with Official Acts (Simple Misdemeanor)
- Public Urination (Simple Misdemeanor)
- 14 Counts of Traffic Violations (Scheduled and Non-Scheduled Violations)
The Marshalltown Police Department said it was assisted in this incident by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Marshalltown Fire Department, and UnityPoint Health Marshalltown.
