AMES, Iowa — Thanksgiving is almost upon us, and there are still construction projects after the mild fall weather. But the construction is not expected to cause any delays for those heading to Grandma’s house.

“We’re certainly going to see an uptick in volume on our roadways next week for the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Brian Worrel, of the Iowa DOT Workzone Operations. “I’m hoping the zones won’t be a bigger impact than they have been over the past season for the summer, so we’re hoping to get through folks as safely as we can.”

The construction weather was good this past summer, but was slowed a little by rains this fall.

“At the DOT safety is our number one concern and so we really just want to keep emphasizing to folks let’s focus on getting where you’re going safely and not necessarily the most quickly or efficiently,” said Worrel. “We’re on the same team so let’s keep our distractions to a minimum, put your phone down, watch what you’re doing and let’s just get everybody where they’re going safely.”

“It’s one of the best resources for folks, 511 ia.org you can see road conditions, weather we started to see some of that northern Iowa already being snow or ice covered,” said Worrel. “You can see the construction projects, when lanes are closed, so that’s really your main hub of information.”
