Teen charged with attempted murder in knife attack at Pella Middle School

PELLA, Iowa — The Pella Police Department released more information on Thursday about a knife attack that resulted in two students being injured at Pella Middle School Wednesday morning.

At around 7:41 a.m., before the start of classes, the police department responded to a report of a student armed with a knife inside the middle school. According to police, within two minutes of being alerted of the situation officers had secured the school and taken the student into custody.

According to police, a 14-year-old male student had brought a large kitchen knife to school and attacked multiple students in the cafeteria. The male student attacked a female student and hit her in the neck and back several times with the knife. The male student then tried to attack a second student, but was unsuccessful. The male student then attacked a third student, striking her in the arm with the knife.

Police said the two students who were attacked sustained minor lacerations and were able to be treated and released at the scene.

The male student has now been charged with the following in juvenile court:

  • Three counts of Attempt to Commit Murder
  • Two counts of Willful Injury
  • One count of Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury
  • One count of Possession of a Dangerous Weapon by a Minor

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and more information will be released when made available. The Pella Police Department is asking parents and students with any information about the incident to contact the department.
