SPENCER, Iowa (KCAU) — UPDATE: Law enforcement officials have provided more details on an incident that took place at a church in Spencer, Iowa on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, at about 4:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop on a truck near 11th Street SW and 11th Avenue SW. Police say the vehicle in question, a 1998 Red Chevrolet pickup truck, had been stolen and was being driven by Andrew Phillips, 30, of Spirit Lake.
The truck reportedly didn’t stop and instead drove through city limits. During the ensuing pursuit, Phillips allegedly showed a firearm and fired a shot outside the window.
The pursuit continued through a Spencer Municipal Hospital construction zone, causing “significant damage,” police say.
Phillips kept driving until he reached the First Christian Church’s parking lot. At this time, according to the sheriff’s office, he “took his own life while still in the vehicle.”
The hospital and church, as well as Spencer Middle School, were put on a temporary lockdown as a precaution.
The sheriff’s office was helped by the Spencer Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa State DNR, and more.
