Improperly installed chimney likely cause of Marshalltown structure fire

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — An improperly installed chimney pipe of a wood burning stove may be to blame for a structure fire in Marshalltown overnight.

At around 1:45 a.m. on Monday the Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a machine shop type building was on fire in the 500 block of South 5th Street. When firefighters arrived on scene they found smoke coming from the rear side and roof of the building.

According to the fire department, firefighters located a fire in the outer wall and roof assembly. Firefighters were able to quickly get the fire under control. Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an improperly installed chimney pipe of a wood burning stove, the fire department said.

No injuries were reported and the owner of the building was not displaced.
