DES MOINES, Iowa — Friday is the last day for parents to sign up for assistance from the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree program lets parents pick out free toys for their children for Christmas.
Jolene Hull, the Associate Area Commander of the Salvation Army of Des Moines, said the program has provided gifts for thousands of children.
“So 680 households, which translates to about 1,600 children. And we’re anticipating that number to be more like 800 by the time of end today and about 2,000 children. So a lot of work to do on everybody’s part. But we know that Des Moines is a great community and we all step up to spread that Christmas spirit,” Hull said.
To sign up for the program parents need to provide ID as well as identification for their children 12 and under. Parents have until the end of the day Friday to apply and can do so on the Angel Tree Program website.
The Salvation Army also has an online Walmart Gift Registry that allows people to donate toys straight to their office.
“It’s an amazing partnership we have with Walmart, where you can go to Walmart.com Registry, look up the Salvation Army in Des Moines, and we’ve already pre-populated some ideas for you. So if you’re struggling in that regard, no worries, but you can shop as you would like and then purchase and then those toys get shipped exactly to this location,” Hull said.
