Gabe on the Go: Escape to the natural beauty of Brenton Arboretum

DALLAS CENTER, Iowa — Winter may be growing ever closer, but there are still plenty of chances to head to an arboretum just half an hour west of Des Moines.

The Brenton Arboretum is located in Dallas Center, northwest of Des Moines. The area occupies around 150 acres and is home to more than 4,000 trees!

As the name implies, an arboretum is a great place to learn about trees. More than 200 different kinds of trees are spread across the Brenton Arboretum.

There are also more than six miles of trails around the area. The trails wind through rolling hills and ponds. The Brenton Arboretum also has a green-roofed pavilion on its grounds. Near the pavilion is a kids’ play area. Members can rent the pavilion for private events.

Throughout the year, the Brenton Arboretum hosts meditation and yoga events every Wednesday at noon. There’s also a Kid’s Nature Club and Summer Camp.

Staff at the arboretum hope to make it more of a destination. They’re planning several events throughout 2025, such as an Earth Day celebration, crafty cocktails, and an outdoor concert. In August 2025, Market on the Prairie will take place, which will be made up of local vendors with crafts and projects. There is no fee for vendors or booth space.

The Brenton Arboretum is open year-round and admission is free. For more details on upcoming events and on the area, visit their website here.
