Iowa wife who put eyedrops in husband’s drink receives 5 year max prison sentence

MARION COUNTY, Iowa — A Pleasantville woman who spiked her husband’s drink with eyedrops was sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison.

Daisy Zantjer

Daisy Zantjer, 39, was accused of putting eyedrops in her husband’s drink on two separate occasions in July of 2023, according to a criminal complaint. Eyedrops contain tetrahydrozoline, a chemical that if consumed can cause life-threatening symptoms such as abnormal heart rhythms, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, and breathing problems.

A year later, on July 30th, Zantjer was arrested and charged with two counts of Administering Harmful Substances and two counts of Domestic Abuse Assault – injury or mental illness first offense, following an investigation involving the Pleasantville Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations.

In September, as part of a plea deal, Zantjer pled guilty to one count of Administering Harmful Substances and one count of Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Bodily Injury, which carry a maximum prison sentence of five years and one year – respectively.

On November 7th, Zantjer received the maximum sentence for both charges, but was ordered to serve them concurrently (meaning she will serve the sentences at the same time) for a maximum of five years in prison. Zantjer was also ordered to receive a mental health evaluation and follow treatment, take anger management classes, enroll in the Iowa Domestic Abuse Program, and pay restitution.
