Tricks and treats ahead in the forecast, depending on which night you go

DES MOINES, Iowa — We began the day with very warm conditions for this time of year, with temperatures in the 70s (aided by strong south winds) on a day when the average high is 57.

Highs on Wednesday will likely be set just after midnight, with temperatures for the most part falling slowly for the rest of the day.

For Tuesday, expect wind gusts to around 45 mph. Those gusts may exceed 50 mph in spots during the evening hours. Winds look to die down by Thursday afternoon.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of southern Iowa in a slight risk for severe weather, with gusty winds and hail being the main threats late tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Below, is the progression of rain and thunderstorms across central Iowa on Wednesday. Rain looks to begin by midday, with the stronger storms and heavier rain coming during the late afternoon and evening.

By comparison for those interested, temperatures in the Des Moines area at 6 PM Thursday will be around 50 degrees, with winds becoming light.
