Proposal to turn former Spaghetti Works building into bar struck down

DES MOINES, Iowa — A proposal to turn the former Spaghetti Works downtown into a bar was struck down on Wednesday.

After 45 years in operation the Spaghetti Works on Court Avenue shuttered its doors in March 2023. Since then the historic building has been vacant.

Larry Smithson, a Des Moines businessman, brought forward a proposal to change the former restaurant site into a bar. That proposal was met with disapproval from the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Des Moines, as the association didn’t want to see another bar on Court Avenue and didn’t want to see a return of violence that the area has seen in the past.

At a hearing Wednesday night, Smithson went in front of the Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment to request a permit to operate the space as a bar. The board unanimously voted against issuing a bar permit.
