Discarded cigarette likely cause of Ankeny house fire

ANKENY, Iowa — A discarded cigarette may have caused a house fire in Ankeny on Friday.

At around 4:40 p.m. the Ankeny Fire Department responded to a 911 call from a homeowner claiming her deck was on fire in the 1500 block of SE Green Park Circle. When firefighters arrived on scene they found the deck on fire with flames spreading into the home.

Due to the extent of the fire, the Ankeny Fire Department upgraded the fire to a second alarm, bringing additional resources in to assist. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and rescue two cats inside the home. The two cats were provided oxygen and were taken to a veterinary clinic for further evaluation.

The fire department said the fire appears to have been started by a discarded cigarette that was put in a container on the deck.

The Altoona Fire Department, Bondurant Fire Department, Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District, Polk City Fire Department, Urbandale Fire Department, Ankeny Police Department, Polk County Dispatch, Polk County Emergency Management, and American Red Cross assisted in the fire response.
