DES MOINES, Iowa — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced on Tuesday that the number of guns detected at the Des Moines International Airport has nearly doubled the total found in 2023.
According to the TSA, in 2023 there were seven firearms detected at the airport. As of September 30 there have been 13 firearms detected at TSA checkpoints this year.
Nationally there have been 5,028 firearms intercepted at airports from January to September 2024. The TSA said over 93% of the detected firearms were found loaded.
Passengers are allowed to travel with firearms so long as they follow the correct procedures, which include:
The firearm being secured in their checked baggage
Packed unloaded
Locked in a hard-sided case
Declared to the airline when checking the bag at the airline ticket counter
