The sound of gunshots echoed down Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines on Friday night with security cameras catching the suspected gunman sprinting away.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, the Des Moines Police Department said that no arrests had been made and that detectives were continuing to follow up on leads.
“There’s nothing to indicate that this shooting has any connection to the area other than the targeted victims just happened to be there,” said Sgt. Paul Parizek, adding that the department would not be amping up patrols or officers nearby.
Meanwhile, locals said the incident was not going to stop them from frequenting the area.
“I love the coffee place,” said Karishma Chhabria, who recently moved to the city. “The people are very nice, and it’s such a nice community here.”
On Tuesday, it was business as usual in the downtown district with all the normal sites and sounds, like friendly conversation and construction. It was a much different scene than what played out a few days early when a rash of at least seven gunshots rang out around 7 p.m. in broad daylight.
“It’s surprising, said Richard Ochoa, who uses the local transit system and has to walk through the area on a regular basis. “But it just happens everywhere now.”
Three people were shot and a fourth was injured after the gunman opened fire. The suspected shooter was caught on nearby surveillance cameras moments later, sprinting away from the scene past stunned patrons who had been dining outside, enjoying the comfortable evening temperatures.
The shooting has left those who love the area seemingly more disappointed than anything else, including one woman who said the shooting “won’t stop” her from visiting Ingersoll.
“It is just a sad fact of living in America and so it doesn’t necessarily surprise me, but it’s definitely sad that it happened here,” said Madeline Smith who frequents the shops and restaurants along Ingersoll.
Nearby business owners, who have had their fair share of headaches with the years-long construction project that has blocked parking lots and jammed traffic along the corridor, said they were ready to move past the incident.
“I’ve been reached out to by a lot of people in the neighborhood, and a lot of people outside of the neighborhood, people who just kind of love us and our restaurant and all that,” said Cory Wendel, the owner of Lishele’s Fine Foods. “So I don’t see this as being an issue of people being afraid or nervous about what Ingersoll is about at all. And I think it’s a great opportunity for us all to keep communicating.”
Some patrons agree, adding that communication could benefit us all.
“I just hope people people give a conscious talk,” said Chhabria added. “You know? There’s like some sort of a consciousness needed to be just aware of this.”
