Johnston Middle School student in custody after report of weapon on campus

JOHNSTON, Iowa — The Johnston Middle School went into lockdown Thursday afternoon after someone reported seeing a weapon in a bathroom.

According to an email from the Johnston Community School District, the middle school went on lockdown at 2:48 p.m. after a weapon was reportedly to be in an upstairs restroom; no weapon was found. The lockdown was in place until 3:08 p.m., which is about 18 minutes after regular dismissal time, when the all-clear was given.

The Johnston Police Department now has a student in custody.

The district said school administrators and the police department are working together to investigate the incident.
