Polk County — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash east of Ankeny that killed three people on Sunday.

Deputies were called to Northeast 46th Street and Northeast 94th Avenue just before 8 p.m. Sunday on reports of an accident. When deputies arrived on scene, they found two vehicles involved in the accident.

According to the sheriff’s office, the preliminary investigation indicates one vehicle was traveling northbound and the other vehicle was traveling eastbound.

The vehicle traveling northbound contained one person who was pronounced dead on scene. The eastbound vehicle was occupied by two people who were also pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators are working to identify the three people killed and notify the families.
