New poll shows most Iowans oppose current 6-week abortion ban law

DES MOINES, Iowa — A new poll shows a majority of Iowans oppose the so-called fetal heartbeat law. The law bans abortions when cardiac activity is detected, at about six weeks of pregnancy.

The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll found that 59% of Iowans disapprove of the new restrictions, 37% of Iowans favor the new law, and 5% aren’t sure.

This is the first Iowa Poll on the issue since the law went into effect at the end of July.

Iowa Senate Democratic leader Pam Jochum released a statement in response to the latest poll results reading, “Senate Democrats stand with the majority of Iowans who oppose the six-week abortion ban, we believe that everyone should have the freedom to make personal health care decisions without interference from the politicians.”
