Des Moines man accused of stalking ex-girlfriend with Life360 app

URBANDALE, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been arrested for allegedly stalking his ex-girlfriend through the Life360 app.

According to court documents, on Sunday at around 11:03 p.m. officers with the Urbandale Police Department responded to a report of a harassment incident involving a weapon in the 3200 block of 86th Street.

When officers arrived on scene they located 19-year-old Mustafa Abdulrasool Shayyal. According to court documents, Shayyal told officers that he was upset because he saw his girlfriend of two-years on a date with another man and that he was going to confront her and her date, which was why he was at her apartment complex.

During a conversation with the woman Shayyal claimed to be his girlfriend, officers learned that the two had broken up a year ago, court documents state.

Officers also learned that Shayyal had been visiting his ex-girlfriend’s apartment four to five times a week and that he had also been tracking the victim’s location via the Life360 app, a criminal complaint states. The victim told officers that she hadn’t used the application since they broke up and that she had no idea he had been using it to track her, the complaint states.

According to court documents, officers also found a baseball bat inside Shayyal’s vehicle, which he claimed to use for self-defense.

Shayyal was charged with stalking – using technological device. He is currently being held in the Polk County Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 3.
